Arsenal Reportedly Makes A Bid For Portuguese Midfielder

Arsenal have made a bid for Portuguese midfielder William Carvalho according to reports in Portugal.
The Gunners are looking to switch targets having been frustrated in their bid to sign Real Madrid midfielder Sami Khedira. Carvalho had been most closely linked with a move to Manchester United but it appears that Arsenal are keen to explore their options.

Manager Arsene Wenger wants more grit in his midfield, with Mathieu Flamini the only midfielder in their ranks that is a natural ball winner. Mikel Arteta has done an admirable job anchoring the midfield, but his talents are more suited to having the ball than winning it back.

One notable match where Arsenal suffered due to a lack of strength in midfield was the match against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. Flaming was on the verge of a suspension should he have picked up a yellow card in the match,so started on the bench for the Gunners.
By the time he came on at half time the Gunners were already 4-0 down, with a man sent off, and the match as good as over.

Had Arsenal had more options than Flamini that match may not not have been quite the disaster it was, and considering Arsenal also suffered a 5-1 defeat to Liverpool, it is no surprise Wenger wants more protection for his defence. Perhaps he feels Carvalho could be that protection.
