Former Nigerian Olympic Athlete Jailed For Life For Murder In South Africa

Former Nigerian Olympic athlete, Ambrose Monye, a member of the  of the Nigerian team to Souelle 1998  Olympic Games, has been sentenced to life in prison in South Africa for the murder of 26 year old Channelle Henning.

 On the 8th of November 2011, Monye, according to prosecution, killed Henning as she drove off after dropping off her son at the Morning Star Montessori Preschool in Faere Glen, East Pretoria, South Africa.  He and another accomplice, Andre Gouws, who was also sentenced to life in prison, were contracted to kill the woman by her estranged husband.

After almost two years of denying complicity in the shooting the men finally confessed their involvement in the gruesome murder.

According to Andre Gouws testimony in court , Channelle and her husband, Nick have been on a custody battle for their young son for a while. Nick then decided the best way to have full custody of his son was to permanently get rid of his wife. He then contacted Andre Gouws to help carry out the murder with a reward of a million rand if he succeeds. Andre in turn contacted Monye with a promise of a 50,000rands pay off.

After he was contracted Monye in turn contracted  two men, Gerhardus (Doepie) du Please and Willem (Tattoo or Pike) Pieterse who carried out the murder. The two men are already serving 18-year jail terms, following their guilty pleas to the murder charge.

Described by the investigative team as the kingpin of Pretoria's underworld, Ambrose has a history of being involved in murder cases. In 2011, he was arrested and later released in South Africa for allegedly beating a man to death. Ambrose runs a security firm in South Africa.
