Tukur On How Kashamu Became Southwest Rallying Point
The National Chairman, Peoples Democratic Party, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, Saturday in a reply to former President Olusegun Obasanjo's, letter to the party, appealled to him to reconsider his decision to suspend his activities with the party.
Obasanjo had in his letter to Tukur signified his intention to leave the party because it was harbouring “a habitual criminal wanted by the United States government for extradition.” The former president said though he would remain a card-carrying member of PDP, he was withdrawing from all the activities of the party.
In his reply Tukur said the leader and financier of the PDP in Ogun State, Chief Buruji Kashamu, became a rallying point because of the absence of zonal executives in the South-west. According to him, “this vacuum in the South-west has made him the person to whom many members in all the chapters of the party in the zone approach for one form of assistance or the other.”
Tukur pointed out, the PDP has more pressing challenges bordering most importantly on the coming governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun states as well as the overall general election scheduled for 2015, all of which require strong inputs from the former president
“We came in when we were threatened with contempt of court charges for not obeying the court’s order to dissolve the South-west zonal executive and remove some officers of the party. We complied with the court’s orders because of our belief in the rule of law and to avoid consequences of disobeying such orders.
“In my opinion, Buruji became a rallying point because of the absence of a zonal executive in the South-west. This vacuum in the South-west has made him the person to whom many members in all the chapters of the party in the zone approach for one form of assistance or the other,” Tukur added.
