The Kano State Government has approved money for media campaign against increasing rate of rape cases in the state.
The state Commissioner for Justice, Alhaji Maliki Kuliya, told newsmen in Kano on Monday.
Kuliya said the measure was necessary in order to sensitise the public on the problem as no fewer than 100 rape cases were recorded in Kano state between November and December, 2013.
He said Gov. Rabi’u Kwankwaso approved the money during the meeting of the state executive council last week.
``Anyone who listens to the media will know that the thing is getting very alarming.''
According to him, the media campaign against the trend is also necessary so as to tackle the menace which had almost become a daily phenomenon in the state.
``Rape is getting quite problematic not only in Kano but globally.
``Between November and December last year, the ministry has received reports of over 100 rape cases in the state and that is very alarming by any standard,’’ he said.
The commissioner said over 40 persons were convicted of the offence last year.
He urged parents and Islamic scholars to take up the challenge by sensitising their wards and members of the public on the alarming rate of the menace in the state.
``The most disturbing thing is that most of the suspects are people that are known to the victims. So parents need to watch where their children go to or whom they relate with,’’ he said.
He called on courts in the state to sit up so that such cases would not suffer unnecessary delay, to ensure quick dispensation of justice.
