Akwanga (Nasarawa State) - A late evening fire on Monday destroyed some shops at Akwanga Market in Akwanga Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.
The fire, which started about 9p.m. destroyed six stalls, including cosmetics stores, a hairdressing salon and provisions stores.
An eyewitness told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday that the fire was put off an hour later by sympathisers.
Mr Umbugadu Namo, the witness, told NAN that the level of destruction by the fire could have been smaller if the fire service had intervened on time.
“Thank God, women and children provided us water from their homes to put off the fire,” he said.
Namo called on the government at all levels to enhance the services of the fire service by providing the agency necessary tools for work.
NAN recalls that the market was burnt on Jan 1, 2010.
