Nigerian Doctors Insist They Are Still On Strike (New Tweets)

Despite pleas by various governments’ officials for the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) to call off their strike action in the face of the Ebola virus outbreak, the doctors have stuck to their guns, insisting the one month old strike continues.

Nigerian Doctors Suspend Strike Over Ebola

 Public sector doctors in Nigeria  called off their 5-week old strike yesterday August 7th to help with the fight against the outbreak of the deadly Ebola virus in Nigeria.
In a statement issued by the Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, the doctors listed “the incursion of Ebola into Nigeria” as a main reason for suspending the strike.
Two days ago, the Lagos state government through the Commissioner for Health, Dr Idris Jide, had appealed to striking doctors to call off their strike so as to help contain the spread of the virus.

POLICE BRUTALLY ATTACKS PROTESTING POLYTECHNIC STUDENTS, ARRESTS HUNDREDS (PHOTOS)

Nine months after the closure of Polytechnics in the counry due to strike action by the Academic Staff Union,  Polytechnic students are still at home.
Yesterday morning, students from various polytechnics and colleges of education took to the streets to peacefully  protest the lingering strike embarked upon by Academic Unions in polytechnics that has left the tertiary institutions closed for 9 months plus.
Using placard, the students demanded that the federal government should implement the 2009 ASUP agreement and end the HND/BSC dichotomy.

Riots Spread Throughout Ukraine

From Ukraine's Capital city the riots in Ukraine have spread to nearly half the country, as angry demonstrators hurled firebombs, rocks and fireworks at officers.
Riot police responded with tear gas and several dozen protesters were rushed to a makeshift medical area to be treated.
27-year-old Artur Kapelan one of the protesters said "we will force the authorities to respect us, not they but we will dictate the conditions of a truce".

Students protest alleged hike in fees in Otueke University, Bayelsa

Students of the Federal University, Otueke, in Ogbia Local Government Area of Bayelsa, Thursday protested a purported increase in school fees.
The protesting students, who barricaded roads leading to the Otuoke Community and the institution, described the increase in the school fees as unacceptable. The fees were allegedly increased from N55,000 to N85,000.

FG Agrees To Appoint Surgeon-General Of Federation

Abuja, President Goodluck Jonathan has agreed to appoint a Surgeon-General of the Federation as demanded by the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), a competent source in the Presidency, has said.
The source, who pleaded anonymity, made the disclosure to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Abuja.
The source told NAN that Jonathan gave the concession after a meeting he summoned to avert the NMA Jan. 6 planned industrial action.

NUPENG Says It Hasn't Shelved Planned Strike

The Nigerian Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) says it has not shelved its proposed plans to go on strike over the planned sale of the country's refineries.
A statement from the President of NUPENG, Igwe Achese, on Wednesday in Lagos, said the union’s position was still that the decision to privatise the four refineries was hastily taken.
It said it would therefore still be resisted by NUPENG.
``The attention of the union was drawn to some stories that NUPENG has suspended the strike. The union states that the report is erroneous and full of distortions of facts," the statement said.
