National Conference Finally Ends...

 The National Conference, which began on March 17, 2014 has come to an end. The conference ended this morning with a minor amendment to the third volume of the confab report by replacing the draft constitution to read “Resolutions of the conference as draft amendments to 1999 constitution.”

Although the conference has ended, it will however be declared officially closed on Thursday, August 21, 2014  by President Goodluck Jonathan.

Resource Control Trouble May Split Nigeria —N/Delegates

Northern Delegates’ Forum at the National Conference has said the proposals by Committee on Devolution of Power on the ownership and control of Nigeria’s mineral resources may split the country. The forum said it was opposed to some of the proposals to protect the unity of the country.

The conference had witnessed rowdy sessions due to deep divisions among delegates on some proposals by the committee. The rowdy session at the conference on Thursday had forced the chairman, Justice Idris Kutigi, to adjourn plenary abruptly till Monday.

The NDF’s spokesperson said, “The North believes resource control or ownership by constituent parts of the country would make the centre weak and tilt the country towards a confederal arrangement — a harbinger for split.  

Lovers Who Met At National Conference In Abuja Set To Wed

Yes, I do, a couple, who met at on going  the ongoing National Conference will soon pronounce these words in affirmation of their love for each other.  History is about to be made inspite of the fire works going on at the venue, these two were able to find love. When President Goodluck Jonathan made up his mind to convene the confab, he probably never knew that something this positive  would come out of it.

While delegates were sent there to contribute their quota on how to solve the problems facing the country, some have different missions. A delegate from one of the vocal geo-political zones aged between 55 and 60 has fallen in love with another delegate aged between 60 and 65.

National Conference: The Proposed 18 New Nigerian States And Their Capital

Details of the 18 new states proposed by the ongoing National Conference, the states which are  to be created in addition to the 36 already in existence, are as follows:

Edu state - Bida

For the proposed Edu State, which will be created out of the present Niger State, it will be made up of Agagie, Bida North, Edati, Agbakoba, Katcha, Lapai, Labun and Mokwa Local Governments with its capital in Bida.

Revealed: The National Conference Is Set For Major Showdown

 National Publicity Secretary of Afenifere, a Yoruba socio-cultural group, Yinka Odumakin, at the weekend said the southern delegates might eventually head for a major showdown at the on-going National Conference if the northern delegates fail “to accept that Nigeria is a country of equals.”

Odumakin, who is a delegate at the conference, gravely lamented the growing influence of what he described as the invisible government in Nigeria, which he claims is operating in parallel to the visible government headed by President Goodluck Jonathan.

    “We have here with the agenda to have state police and each state can make laws and have capacity to enforce the laws. But the North said we were not ripe for state police. But their argument is that the governors will misuse the power. Yet the northern governors have hisbah.

Jonathan’s Tenure Elongation Memo Floods Confab

A document prepared by one of the delegates from the South-South has been distributed to the delegates seen as loyal to the president on the need to postpone 2015 general elections by 18 months.

The document, prepared by Mr Okon Osung, was distributed to the delegates last week. Osung, who spoke with journalists in Abuja on Friday evening, confirmed that he distributed the controversial document.

He said, “This calls for the postponement or deferment of the scheduled 2015 elections by at least 18 months, while retaining all the democratic institutions at all levels of governance and across the entire spectrum of the country’s political divide, without any bias to the statutory termination dates of such democratic institutions. 

Dora Akunyili Takes Ill, To Be Flown Abroad

Dora Akunyili, ex NAFDAC DG and delegate of the on going national conference, has taken seriously ill and is expected to be flown to india for urgent medical care.

According to reports, 

 Akunyili who was Nigeria’s former minister of information, is currently in  bad condition as her health is fast deteriorating and her doctor was reported to have advised that “waiting till Monday before flying her abroad might be too late.”

After so much speculation about the state of health Mrs. Akunyili, she showed up in March at the National Conference as a delegate .

NATIONAL CONFERENCE EXTENDED BY 6 WEEKS EACH MEMBER TO GET N4.5M MORE!!

The ongoing National Conference has been extended by six weeks. This extension will add about N4.5 million to the more than N9 million they are presently earning.
The conference, which commenced on March 17, was to last for three months till June 19.
The conference will now end on July 31.
The extension is contained in the work plan released to delegates on Wednesday.
However, a spokesperson for the conference, James Akpandem, said he is not aware of the extension.
“What I know is that the period for the committees to complete their work has been extended to May 15,” he said.

In Nigeria Are We Governing Land mass?--Joseph Britto

The National Conference is supposed to an avenue for all Nigerians to air their view on issues affecting this great country Nigeria, but it seems most of us have left it in the hands of the few men and women at the conference. Mr. Joseph Britto is of the view that he can indeed contribute without earning the N12b.

NATIONAL CONFERENCE DELEGATE PLAYING SCRAMBLES RESPONDS

NATIONAL CONFERENCE: FEMALE DELEGATE SLUMPS

A female delegate, Ezenwa Ifeanyinwa yesterday slumped at the National Conference shortly 

after the resumption of the afternoon session.

Mrs. Ifeanyinwa, a representative of the Market Women Association, was returning from the 

lunch break and was heading towards the plenary chamber when she suddenly fainted.

The ailing female delegate was immediately assisted by security agents, including operatives

 from the State Security Service, SSS, and the National Security and Civil Defence Corps, 

NSCDC.

She was taken into one of the ante rooms outside the Conference plenary chamber and was 

later brought out to the lobby where a doctor was brought in to attend to her.

LAMIDO OF ADAMAWA THREATENS THEY WILL TAKE OWNERSHIP OF ABUJA

LESS than two weeks after his comment that he would lead his people to join the Republic of Cameroon if Nigeria disintegrates generated furore in the polity, the Lamido of Adamawa, Dr Muhammadu Barkindo Mustapha, again, told southern resource control agitators to be ready to forfeit their land in all parts of the North, especially Abuja, if their aspiration sailed through.

This is even as he warned against granting autonomy to ethnic nationalities in the country.
Speaking yesterday on the inaugural speech of President Goodluck Jonathan to the National Conference, Dr Mustapha, who is at the conference on the platform of National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria, also said monarchs should be allowed to function the way they are now and should not be given new roles in the new constitution. This is contrary to the views of his colleagues on the matter.

NATIONAL CONFERENCE: Delegate Demands Public Execution For Corrupt Nigerians

Several delegates, who made contributions on the floor of the National Conference Thursday, blamed the country’s woes on its past leaders including some of those who were seated in the hall.
A delegate, Musa Shehu, a transporter, mocked some delegates, who he said stole so much money from the government with which they set up transport companies after they retired.
Instead of investing their loot to benefit Nigerians, he said, Nigerian governors and other political office holder build hotels and palatial homes in Dubai. He called on Nigerians to put pressure on those who loot the nation’s economy and invest abroad to repatriate their loots to the country.

National Conference “Sleeping Delegate” Hamma Misau Is Dead

This is shocking news, a delegate at the ongoing National Conference in Nigeria, retired police AIG Hamma Misau has died at the National Hospital in Abuja. Mallam Misau died last night of an undisclosed illness at the age of 67.

Mallam Misau became famous after a photo of him taking a nap at the conference was shared on social media three days ago.

After months of staying in the hospital and remaining in doors at home, former Minister of Information, Madam Dora Akunyili finally summoned enough courage to show up in public. She has been sick for sometime now and I heard several doctors have not been able to find out what exactly is eating her up. (A report she has denied through her facebook page)

She appeared at the venue of the ongoing National Conference in Abuja on Monday and many top politicians who saw Madam Akunyili just could not recognise her. It was said that she had to introduce herself to some of them...

Heavy security in Abuja as National Conference begins

Barely 24 hours to the commencement of the national conference, security agencies have tightened security in and around the Federal Capital Territory.

The new security arrangement was put in place even as the Federal Government on Thursday made some changes to the list of delegates to the national conference scheduled to begin on Monday with 492 delegates.

On Friday, the armed forces, police and intelligence services were on high alert in the nation’s capital, in preparation for the conference.

SUNDAY PUNCH learnt that the security measure was taken because of the renewed attacks by the Boko Haram sect in the North-East.

Detachments of armed soldiers, mostly drawn from the Guards Brigade, were seen manning checkpoints at various entrances to Abuja.

Checks by our correspondents at some locations revealed an upsurge in vehicular traffic along Kubwa—Zuba and Abuja—Keffi roads, as well as the Umaru Musa Yar’Adua Expressway, commonly referred to as Airport Road.
