A respected Nigerian couple in the United Kingdom have been arrested over allegations of human trafficking and slavery.
Dr Emmanuel Edet, 59, and his wife Antan Edet, 56, who are both senior officials in Britain’s health sector, are said to have held one Ofonime Edet, 38, captive for 25 years.
Ofonime reported his situation to the police after he heard of the release of some women being held as Maoist slaves and was spurred on to secure his own freedom.
Ofonime claimed that he was trafficked to the UK by the couple in 1989 when he was just 13 and since then has been forced to work for no pay despite being promised the opportunity to get an education and earn a living.
Neighbours expressed shock at the revelation due to the status of the couple and said that they had assumed that Ofonime was the couple’s grown son who just never left home.
Dr. Edet is a respected gynaecologist who has written several articles about child welfare while his wife
Antan is a senior ward manager at Ealing hospital.
One neighbour said:
‘It is hard to believe this can be true. Everyone assumed the man was their grown-up son, who simply never left home. ‘I would often say ‘hello’ to him outside the house. He certainly never said anything to me about being held against his will.’Ofonime said that he had been taken in by his captors due to the death of his father which forced him to assume the role of the family’s breadwinner.
The Edets have two sons of their own who the police are now trying to reach for the purpose of the investigation.
Ofonime talked to the police when the Edets had travelled home to Nigeria for a holiday and he was left alone but monitored by a CCTV camera.
The Edets face a jail sentence of 14 years if they are found guilty and convicted.
